The woodland caribou now features in the Animal Portrait series from the Royal Canadian Mint. Canada's woodland caribou species is a subspecies of the broader reindeer and is the largest subspecies of caribou.

Coin Highlights:

  • Contains 3/4 oz of .9999 fine Silver.
  • Multiples of 30 are packaged in mint tubes. Multiples of 600 are packaged in Monster Boxes. All other coins will be in protective packaging.
  • Coins will show signs of spotting.
  • Security enhancements include radial lines on both the obverse and reverse, a micro-engraved maple leaf with the numeral “17” in the middle, and a reeded edge.
  • Obverse: Susanna Blunt’s design of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, along with the $2 face value.
  • Reverse: The boreal woodland caribou is depicted in right-profile relief on the reverse of 2020 Canadian Woodland Caribou 3/4 oz Silver coins. The caribou is featured with large antlers. Both female and male members of the species have antlers. The woodland caribou is the only species of deer in which the female has antlers. In a unique twist, females shed their antlers during pregnancy, protecting them from hunters targeting males for the antlers and meat.

Historically, the boreal woodland caribou in North America had a range that covered more than half of present-day Canada from the border with Alaska in the west to Newfoundland and Labrador. The boreal woodland caribou once resided in the U.S. across New England, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, with extremely small populations left in Idaho and Washington.
