The silver Morgan dollar is the first coin to break out of the neoclassical tradition because George T Morgan used an American woman as a model for his design. Representing Lady Liberty was a Philadelphia school teacher, Anna Willess Williams. The Morgan Dollars were issued from 1878-1904 as a result of the Comstock Lode discovery. Production was ceased for 17 years once the US hit its mandated quota, but the dollar was struck once more in 1921 because of the Pittman Act. Many Morgan dollars were lost due to the Pittman Act: about 270,000,000 of these coins were melted down to support the British economy during WWI. Only about 15% of Morgan Dollars are known to have survived. But, this act also stipulated that the lost coins needed to be replaced. So, they were restruck in 1921 before the Peace silver dollar design was finalized at the end of the year.
